An Easy to Preform Extraction at Home
Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) has gained popularity for its potential health benefits, particularly in the realm of alternative medicine. Named after its creator, Rick Simpson, this cannabis concentrate is renowned for its high concentration of cannabinoids, including THC and CBD. RSO is often used by individuals seeking relief from various ailments, such as chronic pain, cancer, and other serious conditions. Due to the crude form of extraction many of the medicinal effects of the plant remain intact. RSO will also make dosing edibles more consistent, however, the taste of the cannabis will be much stronger in comparison to something like distillate. In this guide, we’ll explore the process of making RSO from cannabis bud or trim, providing step-by-step instructions for a safe and effective extraction.
Ingredients & Equipment
– Decarbed trim or flower
Everclear Alcohol (Or whatever the legally highest food grade ethanol you can source.)
– Mesh Strainer
– Cheese Cloth
– Hot Plate (or seed mat)
– Pyrex Dish
– Fan
– Suitably ventilated area
Directions
1) Place the everclear and trim in the freezer overnight. This will reduce the solubility of the everclear and help pull less chlorophyll which will impact the taste.
2) Once the trim and everclear have cooled, pour in enough everclear to just barely cover the surface of the plant material. Shake the mixture constantly for 2-3 minutes.
3) Strain the solution through your mesh filter and cheese cloth ensuring to squeeze every bit. Return the spent material into the jar and replace it with around half as much everclear. Shake again for another 2-3 minutes.
4) Repeat the straining process and discard the plant material.
5) Pour the everclear solution into a wide pyrex pan and apply gentle heat if possible with a hot plate or seed warming mat. Be sure to do this in a well ventilated area and with a fan blowing onto the tray as the alcohol vapor will be flammable.
6) After some time the liquid will dry down into a thick black resin which is your final product. This can be heated up in order to place into glass syringes for storage (Just be sure to wash out the syringe lubricant before using them with alcohol). This material is psychoactive and can be eaten directly but it is advised to dissolve it in a fat or alcohol before consuming.
Notes
While you likely purged most of the ethanol the only true way to purge it all is by using a heated vacuum chamber. I would not recommend smoking RSO unless you have access to such. Similar to most concentrates, it is recommended to store RSO in glass as the residual alcohol and terpenes can leech metals and chemicals from silicone.
