DIY Vape Guide: Formulating Distillates & Concentrates into Cartridges

This article will be discussing the process of making vape cartridges using cannabinoid distillate or concentrates along with terpenes. Making your own vape cartridges allows you to customize the flavor and cannabinoid profile while also saving quite a bit of money. Before starting it is important that you have spent some time selecting proper hardware to house your vape oil mix. It’s recommended to start with smaller batches; once you have found a mix you enjoy, scale it up.

Ingredients & Equipment

– Cannabinoid distillates or concentrates
– Terpenes (botanical, hemp, or cannabis derived)
– 25ml Pyrex beaker/oven safe container (Do not use silicone as it can leach chemicals into the final product)
– Scoopula
– Scale
Cup warmer
Glass syringe
– Isopropyl Alcohol
– 510 Cartridge (See hardware for more information)

Directions

1) Heat up your distillates/concentrates and weigh out the ratio and quantity you want in an oven safe container. Heating concentrates in the oven is preferable, but if you’re short on time, a microwave can be used as an alternative option. A coffee cup warmer is recommended to maintain heat throughout the process. If using a concentrate that is primarily in its acid form, such as THCa, you will need to decarboxylate it before starting. See our guide on decarboxylation here. Adding small amounts of alternative and non-intoxicating cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, or CBC can help replicate the full spectrum effect of flower. Experiment around with different cannabinoid mixes to find your preference.
2) After heating the cannabinoid mixture to a point where it can be stirred easily, you can then add in the terpenes. The recommended percentage of terpenes to add ranges from 7-10%, depending on personal preference. As you add more terpenes, the flavor of the final product will become stronger and the viscosity of the oil will decrease. Terpenes can cause the cartridge to become a bit harsh so mix with caution. Thoroughly mix the oil to ensure proper homogenization.
3) Once the oil is properly homogenized, draw up the oil into the syringe and begin filling the cartridges. Make sure the oil mixture is heated properly before filling, this will make the filling process smoother. Allow 24 hours for the cartridges to properly wick the oil before using.
